Thanks for all of the added information. We got our 5 chicks from you the end of April and the 2 oldest have been laying eggs for a couple or weeks now. We almost "lost" one of our Easter Eggers due to smoke & stress during the fire, but she's recovered just fine. All things are going well for this first time "chicken farmer"; with one exception, the occasional(twice now) visit in the pen by a bear. Not sure what he's after, but I don't think it's the chicks. Any ideas on BEAR deterrent? Thanks Again!

I am glad that your chicks are all doing well now! Good luck with the bear. A puppy might help!!!
Last year we lost one of our dogs, to old age, and within a day or so a bear broke into our chicken coup and killed all but one hen. We have a fort built out there! Our chicken pen has wire that goes underground, all the way up the sides and over the top. There is wood along the bottom and this pen. This pen as well as a few others is surrounded by a much larger pen that two of our dogs are inside of most of the time. This pen also has a strand of electric wire around the bottom of it!!
We have not had any bear problems this year...... But my sister was walking out in the woods yesterday and saw one.....
Try feeding the chickens in the morning and not at night. Keep their feed inside of a sealed container, indoors of possible. And a dog really might help! If a bear comes to close the dog will bark, alerting you and with any luck scaring off the bear.
Good luck, let us know how things turn out :)
